What kind of instrument do I need?
To learn the piano, a student needs access to either a quality digital piano or a regular maintained acoustic piano. If you would like some help finding a suitable instrument, grab my Piano Buying Guide and don’t hesitate to contact me with any questions. Picking an instrument can be a daunting task, but I am here to help!
How old does my child need to be to start piano lessons?
I require that students be 6 years old to start lessons. I have previously taught younger students, and have found that 4-5 year olds are not always as successful, so I prefer to wait to guarantee a good experience for the student.
Am I too old for piano lessons?
No! There is no such thing as too old. Many musicians come to the instrument later in life, and even those who start younger often continue to take occasional lessons through adulthood. Playing the piano is a wonderful pastime for retirees.
How much should my kid be practicing?
Kids need to play regularly to improve. I recommend 5 days a week. Practicing is less about clocking minutes and hours and more about accomplishing something!
All of my students go home each week with a list of things to work on, and we often break that down into specific tasks. If you want to see an example of how I structure home practice time for kids check out this blog post: Printable Piano Practice Charts
